Stress on better connectivity in NE

By CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, April 21 Much importance has been given to connectivity in the country in the 12th Five Year Plan. This was revealed by Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, at the 75th annual general meeting of Assam Tea Planters Association and platinum jubilee celebration held at Tocklai Experimental Station here today.

Pointing out the immense potential of the north-eastern region to grow into a centre of trade and commerce, he said that connectivity to the neighbouring countries through this region can make it possible. Geographically the north eastern region of India is in such an advantageous position that it is quite easy and less expensive to communicate with other South East Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and China.

He further said that the 12th Five-Year Plan will boost the Look East Policy of the government by improving the connectivity of North East with the other South East Asian countries.

He also expressed his hope that Guwahati, the central city of the north eastern region would be the transit point for international transportation to and from this part of the country.
