Straight fight between BJP, Cong in Dhemaji LAC bypolls

SILAPATHAR, April 7 - Nearly 2, 19, 771 voters will exercise their franchise in 113 Dhemaji (ST) LAC bypolls on April 9 under Dhemaji district. A straight contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) will be seen here.

Both the main partied have held party meet, political meet and door to door campaign in every nook and corner.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Senior Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Naba Kumar Doley, MP of Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat Pradan Baruah, several ministers and MLAs of the ruling Government have campaigned here. Five candidates Dr Ranoj Pegu of the BJP, INC candidate Babul Sonowal, CPM candidate Jadu Hazarika, SUCI�s Hema Kanta Miri and VPI�s Raj Kumar Doley are in the race. The counting of votes will be held on April 13 next.

In 2016, BJP candidate Pradan Baruah won the seat. BJP candidate, Pradan Baruah received 69,592 and INC�s Sumitra Doley Patir received 50,471 of the total vote turnout of 1,70,072 including 84,362 male and 85,692 female voters. In 2016, total voters were 2,10,865 including 1,08,293 male and 1,02,572 female voters.

The INC candidate Sumitra Doley Patir won the seat of Dhemaji LAC twice in 2006 and 2011 while AGP candidate Dilip Saikia Sonowal had won the seat four times in 1985, 1991, 1996 and 2001. AGP had a strong base here between 1985 and 2005. That base still exists. The BJP has continued its alliance with the AGP, Sanmilito Gono Shakti Assam (SGSA) and the Tiwa and Rabha Sangram Samiti for the bypolls.
