TURA, April 21 - Parts of West Garo Hills district were hit by a cyclonic storm last evening, which damaged houses and uprooted trees and electricity and mobile towers. At Babadam on the outskirts of Tura, there are reports of some people getting injured in the storm.

The district has been witnessing recurrent squalls over the past month.

The storm affected a number of blocks like Selsella, Dadenggre, Rongram and Tikrikilla. Our emergency response teams have been on the job. An assessment of the damage is being done through various blocks. Collated data will be available once it is provided to us, said Ram Singh, DC of West Garo Hills.

According to information received here, at least 1,500 houses in 40 villages were damaged in the storm though the number is expected to rise further.

Other districts, however, reported little or no damage during the cyclonic storm.

The worst-affected villages are Edenbari, Rongbandi, Duragre Nengjagittim, Babadam, Dumnidikgre, Wadanang, Alotgre, Megongre, Dadenggre, Romgre, Tomagre, Kalsingre, Rongnabatgre, Rom Agal and Rongchugre.

In Rom Agal, a mobile phone tower was destroyed in the storm. A large number of trees were uprooted, which blocked the roads.
