Storm hits West Garo Hills

TURA, May 21 - A severe storm lashed West Garo Hills district in the wee hours today and left a trail of destruction, mainly in the Rongram block.

Local residents stated that many homes have been damaged and more than a dozen villages have been affected. The storm flattened thatched and bamboo homes, blew away the roofs of schools, and uprooted trees and electric posts.

The storm followed a warning issued by the West Garo Hills DC, Ram Singh, to all administration branches to remain vigilant against weather vagaries from May 21 to 24.

According to the IMD, winds touching speed of 40-60 km are expected to hit the region over the next few days. Block officials from Rongram stated that Rengsanggre, Asanang, Jendragre, Alagre, Aguragre, Tebronggre, Waram Asim, Digranggre, Rongpotgre and Matchurigre villages have been the worst hit in the storm.

The storm also affected East and North Garo Hills to some extent. Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills, witnessing the uprooting of trees and snapping of power lines.
