Storm causes damage to State Zoo

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, May 14 Residents of the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden had a miraculous escape after a power cable snapped last night over the campus during the storm that lashed large tracts Guwahati and adjoining areas.

Zoo DFO, Narayan Mahanta said, The power line was close to the zoo, but fortunately its snapping did not cause harm to anyone. He said that the fierce winds uprooted several trees and tore away branches from others. One of the trees actually fell over the emu enclosure, but the inmates escaped unhurt.

Home to a wonderful array of flora, the zoo has witnessed considerable damage to trees this summer. According to an official such impact on the trees has not been seen for a long time inside the zoo premises. Damage to trees and some utilities has also been reported from the Gauhati University campus. Just near the entrance to the main administrative block, a large tree toppled over the road impeding access to the building this morning.
