Steps to check poaching in Kaziranga on cards

By Correspondent

KOHORA, Dec 3 With an aim to check the poaching activities, mostly during flood time, concrete measures would be adopted to apprehend the antisocial elements and all required demands would be met before the arrival of next monsoon so that no further casualties of rhinos and other wildlife take place in Kaziranga National Park, said Principal Chief Conservator of Forest( Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Suresh Chand at Kohora while commemmorating a decade of Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation from 2002 to 2012.

While speaking to a few select mediapersons at Kohora, PCCF Suesh Chand informed that during the recent floods in Kaziranga, maximum casualties took palce inside the Park area and only six rhinos out of many that crossed over to Karbi Anglong area for safe shelter could not be saved and added that at present about 235 personnel from Assam Forest Force, 170 home guards, and 400 regular staff have been deployed in Kaziranga National Park and a roadmap had been chalked out for setting up of some anti-poaching camps in Karbi Anglong area near the Park.

While answering to a question put by this correspondent with regard to shifting of a Royal Bengal tiger to Bhopal instead of keeping it in Assam State Zoo, a couple of months back, from Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) of Kaziranga, Chand said that the cub while growing up could not be kept since State Zoo at Guwahati was overcrowded and secondly it was not correct to display or exibit for public view since it was raised in a wild ambience in the rescue centre where no visitors were allowed to see the animals.

Meanwhile, a joint combing operation by Assam Police and Forest Guards has been launched in Burapahar area after some footprints of suspected poachers were noticed by Forest staff inside the Park, said Director of Kaziranga NK Basu.
