Steps taken to maintain law and order: DGP

JORHAT, July 16 - Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political), Kumar Sanjay Krishna chaired a meeting attended by the State Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwal, Special DG (Border) BJ Mahanta and Inspector General of Police (SB) Hiren Chandra Nath and representatives of several students� organisations at the Jorhat Circuit House this evening, to seek cooperation of the students� bodies in maintaining peace and harmony in the State before and after publication of the final NRC list which is scheduled to be published on July 31.

A district administration source said that Saikia stated in the meeting that adequate measures have been undertaken by police to maintain law and order in the run-up to and after the publication of the final NRC list.

The DGP, while stating that any attempt by troublemakers to disrupt peace will be dealt firmly, urged the students� community and the civil society to remain alert against any bid to spread rumours to incite violence.

The Additional Chief Secretary too sought the support of all sections of the society to maintain peace and tranquility on and after the publication �final NRC list.

Commissioner (Upper Assam Division) Julie Sonowal, senior Jorhat district administration and police officials, attended the meeting, the source said. Central Police Range DIG based at Diphu, Dilip Dey also attended the meeting, the source informed.
