Statues of Nilotpal, Abhijeet to come up at Kangthilangso

By Correspondent

DIPHU, June 12 - The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has decided to install statues of Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath at the tourist location of Kangthilangso as a mark of respect to the victims of the lynching incident that took place at Panjuri village near Kangthilangso under the Dokmoka police station in the evening of June 8.

Announcing this, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Council, Tuliram Ronghang, also declared that the KAAC authority will extend a sum of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

A number of tribal and non-tribal people reside in the Karbi Anglong autonomous area and we are a mosaic of the larger Assamese society. We are part and parcel of Assam. Anyone who tries to create communal discord will be firmly dealt with, asserted Ronghang, as the Council formally condemned the killing in a meeting held at the Secretariat conference hall in the presence of mediapersons and government officials this evening.

The CEM lamented that extreme fanaticism, mob frenzy and intolerance within a section of youths have taken many lives in various places of Assam and near the Panjuri village itself.

A few years back, two Karbi youths were killed by local people suspecting them to extremists. To fight this syndrome, we will soon organise awareness programmes all over the district, he stated.

Police have already picked up over 30 persons in this connection, and one of the key suspects, Ulfa Timung, a Youth Congress member, will also be nabbed soon. The Chief Minister has advised the Council to implement skill development schemes for tourist guides in all the tourist spots of Karbi Anglong and ensure safety and security of the visitors with the help of police, Ronghang stated.

Meanwhile, shortage of essential items has hit many parts of the district, including Diphu, due to irregular plying of trucks and buses between various destinations of Karbi Anglong and the mainland. The law and order situation within the Council area, however, is reported to be normal.
