Statewide protests over Pritam killing

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 21 The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today staged a State-wide demonstration protesting the barbarous killing of young research scholar Pritam Bhattacharjee and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits behind the murder.

The protesters burnt effigies of Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy and decried the lackadaisical response of the authorities to the killing.

AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai and general secretary Tapan Gogoi said that both Roy and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had exhibited utter callousness on the issue, with no meaningful intervention forthcoming. Similarly, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has also done little to pressurize the Bihar Government, Railway Ministry and the Centre, they added.

AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya even went to the extent of accusing the Railway Ministry and the Bihar Government of trying to shield the killers. This cannot be acceptable to the people of Assam, and the AASU will not stop till justice is delivered, he said.

In Guwahati, several hundred AASU members took part in the protest. They staged a demonstration in front of the main gate of the NF Railway headquarters at Maligaon, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits behind the murder of Pritam.

The agitators burnt an effigy of Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy and shouted slogans and decried the failure of the Railway Minister and the Bihar Government.

Pritam, who had left for Delhi by the Avadh-Assam Express, was robbed inside the train in Bihar and later killed by the goons after forcibly getting him down from the train.

Our Sivasagar Correspondent adds: The Sivasagar district unit of AASU also burnt the effigy of Mukul Roy at Doulmukh Charali. Over a hundred AASU activists raised slogans demanding justice for the student. They also demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits who killed Bhattacharya.
