GUWAHATI, Sept 27 To put Assam on the world tourism map, the State Government has decided to host an international tourism carnival in April next year.

This was announced by Minister of Tourism Chandan Brahma after inaugurating the Assam Tourism Brand Summit organised here by the Directorate of Tourism on the occasion of World Tourism Day on Tuesday.

Brahma said that the government was keen to explore the two vantage points that Assam had over other regionsits unique culture and heritage and the rich bio-diversity for putting the State on the international tourism circuit.

Tourism is the only non-polluting sector and growth of this sector will ensure employment generation, flow of foreign currency and above all secure social peace and prosperity, said Brahma stressing that in a conflict-hit State like Assam, tourism was a potent tool to usher in lasting peace.

It needs to be mentioned here that apart from the international tourism carnival scheduled from April 8 to 10 in the capital city, the department is planning another extravaganza in the form of adventure tourism in October 2012. Both these events are expected to boost the tourism potential of the State and ensure more footfalls of international backpackers.

Assam has two world heritage sites and numerous other fascinating destinations. The need of the hour is to showcase the cultural and bio-diversity of the State with adoption of the right strategy, said the Minister adding that all the resources would be exploited in a sustainable manner to promote the tourism sector. He mentioned that new resorts, golf courses, convention centres would be set up to provide all the amenities to the backpackers.
