State ready for Abhiruchi Sports Day

GUWAHATI, Sep 1 - Like previous years the 32nd edition of the Abhiruchi Sports Day, which has been organised on the occasion of the birthday of the State�s first Arjuna award winner Bhogeswar Barua, will be celebrated on September 3 in various venues of the State.

In the central function in Guwahati, Union Minister of State for Sports & Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal and former table tennis star Monalisa Barua Mehta will lead the mass jogging on Thursday. Sonowal will flag off of the mass run.

The mass jogging will begin at the Chandmari flyover at 6:15 am and culminate at the RG Baruah Sports Complex. Then inter-school and club PT and group dance competitions will be held from 8:30 am onwards.

Addressing a press meet at Assam Olympic Association conference hall, the chairman of the organising committee, Balendra Mohan Chakravarty confirmed the names who will be felicitated and honoured this year. Altogether 31 players have been selected this year for felicitation who represented India last year.

The sportspersons to be felicitated are Jayanta Talukdar, Sanjoy Boro, Dhaniram Basumatary, Himani Boro, Satbeer Kaur (archery), Shiva Thapa, Lovleena Borgohain, Jamuna Boro, Pwilao Basumatary, Anee Lama (boxing), Lymoon Narzari (athletics), Arijit Chaliha, Pragyan Jyoti Gogoi (badminton), L Thoinu Chanu, K Rajen Singh (sepak takraw), Rekharani Gogoi (taekwondo), Nafisa Sadiq (rowing), Birdie Boro (TT), Rajani Deori (wushu), Monalisa Sonowal, Swapnapriya Baruah, Champak Dutta (weightlifting), Nijum Muchahary, Holicharan Narzari, Bishnu Bordoloi, Anjana Saikia, Binit Rai, Milan Basumatary, Kapil Boro (football), Parikshit Somani (tennis), Rituraj Singh (shooting). Bhabajyoti Goswami (RG Baruah sports organiser award).

Gobinda Upadhyay will get the Sidananda Das Memorial Award (coaching). Paddler Agniv Bhaskar Gohain and swimmer Abhigyan Madhurjya Dutta will be given the promising player award along with Rs 2,000 each. Dhiren Baruah, Harish Goswami, Anil Baruah and Tajmahal Hussain will receive the sports organiser awards.

The SBI, ONGC, OIL, NRL, NEEPCO, NHPC and Sarba Sikha Abhijan, Assam are sponsoring the day-long programme.

Other members of the organising committee, Sukumar Medhi, Jayanta Das and Pabitra Gogoi were also present in the press meet. The birth day of Bhogeswar Barua will be celebrated around 100 venues in the State on Thursday.
