State ranking tennis from today

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 � The 21st North East Tennis Foundation (NETF) All Assam Ranking Tennis Championship will get off at the NETF complex here tomorrow.

Addressing a press conference at the NETF conference hall today to give details of the championship, NETF president Dr Parthajyoti Gogoi secretary Ankush Dutta said this time Glaxo Smith Kline Consumer Health Care Ltd will sponsor the championship where Rs 52,700 is at stake as scholarship money.

Players who enter the quarterfinal stage will get scholarship.

Competitions will be conducted for boys U-12, U-14, U-18, girls U-14, U-18 (all singles), veteran, above 35 and 45 years doubles and mixed doubles, above 35 years. Along with scholarship money, ranking points will also be given to the players by the All Assam Tennis Association (AATA) which has recognised the championship.

A total number of 210 players from Assam Nagaland, Meghalaya and Mizaoram have confirmed their participation. Glaxo official Sagar Sharma said it is their maiden venture to sponsor a sporting event in Assam. They are happy to be the title sponsor of the meet, Sharma said. Organising secretary Diganta Gogoi was also present in the press conference.

Meghalaya CM�s son to play: Gidesm Dolhat Sangma, son of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, will be seen in action in the boys U-12 event, informed Dr Gogoi. Explaining about the participation of players from other States in the Assam ranking meet, Dutta said, as the other States of the north-eastern region do not have their own tournaments, they send their players to Assam tournaments after registering with the AATA. The championship will be inaugurated by NETF president Dr Parthajyoti Gogoi at 9.30 am tomorrow.
