State power situation improves

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, May 13 The total power availability in the State has improved a lot today with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) purchasing an additional amount of 260 MW from outside the NE Region.

The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.(PGCIL) restored yesterday evening one of its two 400 Kv Binnaguri-Bongaigaon circuits, which were damaged by a storm on May 3 near New Alipurduwar. This has enabled the State to draw more power.

Following this, the APDCL withdrew the unscheduled load-shedding it had effected in the State since May 3, with effect from yesterday evening.

However, since yesterday was a partial holiday and today was a weekly holiday, the power demand on the two days was also less than what is faced on the week days.

APDCL sources said that the PGCIL is likely to go for an intermediate shutdown of the restored circuit within a day two, for the restoration of its second damaged circuit on this route. Restoration of the second circuit is expected to be complete by May 15, sources said.

It may be mentioned that prolonged power-cuts made life miserable in the State. Tea gardens, industrial establishements, business concerns etc. were badly affected due to the poor power supply during the last ten days.
