State MP calls for safety of rail passengers

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 19 Calling on the Centre to take effective measures for the safety and security of rail passengers, particularly women, Congress MP Pankaj Bora urged the Railway Ministry to deploy additional Railway Protection Force personnel in the trains bound for the North-east.

Making a Special Mention in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Bora said that passengers travelling in trains from the North-east to major destinations have been regularly subjected to harassment, manhandling, theft and dacoity and in some instances, even subjected to sexual abuse and racial discrimination.

The Congress MP referred to the case of the woman hailing from Sonitpur district, who was travelling from New Delhi on July 3 by the Sampark Kranti Express, and whose body was later found near railway tracks. It was alleged that she was brutally raped and thrown out of the train.

Bora pointed out that all trains, including the Rajdhani Express, are always crowded and women passengers travelling alone are often subjected to harassment.
