NEW DELHI, Dec 19 Even as AICC leaders flagged the issue of corruption in Assam, Congress president, Sonia Gandhi called for narrowing down of differences between the party and State Government.

Party sources said that the Congress president held a brief meeting with the delegation from Assam at Burari on the sidelines of Plenary Session to take stock of the political situation in the State.

The delegation that included senior leaders including Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, PCC president, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Paban Singh Ghatowar besides others, was also joined by general secretary in-charge for Assam, Digvijay Singh sources added.

During the stock-taking exercise, the AICC general secretary surprised the State Congress leadership by flagging the issue of corruption and growing belligerence of the Opposition, which has been put the Gogoi Government on the mat.

Singh mentioned that Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti activist Akhil Gogoi has become very active off late and using the RTI, he has been collecting information about assets of ministers. It was for this reason that the ministers have been asked to submit details of their properties, he informed the Congress president, sources said.

Amidst the growing nervousness among the State leadership, Gandhi asked both Gogoi and Kalita to ensure that the differences between the organisation and government are narrowed down and stressed the need for both to work together to emerge victorious in the Assembly election.

Sources said, when asked for his opinion, the Chief Minister said that he had no doubt that the Congress would win the next Assembly election. Kalita also seconded Gogois view.

Meanwhile, there was resentment among the Congressmen from the State over the arrangements. Some of the PCC and AICC members from the State had to go without lunch and had to attend the session on empty stomach, while others complained about lodging facilities.

Noted freedom fighter, Hem Bharali, who is being felicitated tomorrow complained of poor living arrangements. When the Chief Minister came to know about it he had her shifted to the State Guesthouse, sources said.

Meanwhile, PCC president, Kalita hosted a dinner for the visiting Congressmen at his residence.
