State guitarists create Limca record

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 3 As rain played the spoilsport, Assams bid to break the Guinness World Record for the largest guitar ensemble fell short by a considerable margin with only 5406 guitarists showing up at the Sarusajai sports complex today.

The record is currently held by Poland, where a total of 6346 guitarists played to a common tune.

However, todays ensemble which played to the tune of Dr Bhupen Hazarikas Bristirnno Parore was able to break the Limca Book of Record, a national record which until now was held by Meghalaya. The certificate was handed over to the organizing committee by the representatives of Limca Book of Record today itself.

Guitarists, who turned up from across the country, played the tune of the maestroas evergreen number for almost seven minutes as the entire Sarusajai sports complex rose to an unprecedented occasion. The organizers now plan another attempt to break the record sometime next year.

Subhrajyoti Das, chief coordinator of the organizing committee, said, Had there been no rain, we could have achieved the feat. But, we are satisfied by what we have done.

Apart from the award, we are happy that we could pay homage to legendary artiste Dr Bhupen Hazarika in such a grand manner, Das said.

Meanwhile, music lovers from various parts of the State thronged the sports complex to witness what may be billed as a historic moment.

A host of noted musicians of the State took part in the ensemble which began around 5 pm today.
