GUWAHATI, Dec 17 � Other North Eastern States should consider and adopt policies to encourage regional cinema on the lines pursued by the Assam Government, Manju Borah, chairperson, Joint Action Committee of Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA) said this recently. She thanked Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for his initiatives to promote filmmaking in regional languages.
By offering financial concessions to the motion picture industry, the Assam Government has saved many exhibition halls from closure. Newly-constructed cinema halls will get a tax holiday for the next five years as part of the Government�s support plan.
Addressing a media and entertainment conclave in Kolkata recently, she mooted the idea of an Indian company or government organisation to take eastern cinema to a bigger audience. Digital film- making and digital theatres could be some of the means which can help promote the cinema of the region. The Internet could also be used in exposing the films to a larger audience.
She criticised the removal of textbooks on history, heritage and culture from schools, which has emerged as a hurdle in creating an audience well versed with its roots. It will further affect the new generations in having a strong bond with their historical and cultural background.
