State Govt for Chetia�s involvement in peace talks

NEW DELHI, Dec 16 - The Assam Government advocated the involvement of ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia in the on-going peace process, stressing on expediting the ongoing talks with all the militant groups for bringing a lasting solution of the problem of militancy in the State.

The Chief Minister said that as ULFA general secretary, Anup Chetia is an important figure in the context of peace talks, the Government of Assam had all along been pursuing with the Centre for repatriation of Chetia. Now, since he had been finally brought to the country, State Government feel that he should be associated with the ongoing peace talks between the Government and the pro-talk faction of ULFA.

The Chief Minister made this plea when he met the Prime Minister this afternoon at his Parliament House Office. The Chief Minister also discussed about the security scenario with the Prime Minister during the SAF Games in Guwahati.

Pointing to reports of threats from various forces including jihadi elements and Maoists, the Chief Minister urged Modi not to withdraw any forces from the State in view of the Games.

�I have been drawing the attention of the Central authorities to the high risk of these elements striking during the Games,� Gogoi told this newspaper.

About the issue of illegal migrants, the Chief Minister said the Government of Assam is taking the matter with all seriousness and commitment. With the establishment of the additional 64 new Foreigners� Tribunals in August 2015, disposal of cases has been expedited.
