State Govt creating rift over AIIMS: Congress

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 21 - Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today alleged that the State Government led by Sarbananda Sonowal is out to create rift among the people of Central Assam on the issue of setting up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

In a statement here today, APCC secretary Bibhuti Bhusan Barthakur alleged that the State Government had engaged BJP MLA from Jagiroad Pijush Hazarika to form an AIIMS Demand Committee at Jagiroad overnight with the intention to divide the people of Central Assam and to weaken the demand for setting up the premier institute at Raha.

Significantly, Pijush Hazarika was associating himself with the Raha AIIMS Demand Committee till the other day and was taking part in the agitational programmes undertaken by the Demand Committee.

On July 20, a day after Chief Minister Sonowal held a discussion with the Raha AIIMS Demand Committee, the Chief Minister accepted a memorandum from the Jagiroad AIIMS Demand Committee, making a mockery of the wishes of the Raha people, alleged Barthakur.

Meanwhile, the APCC will hold an extended executive committee meeting at Rajiv Bhavan here on July 31 to review the political situation in the State, said a separate press statement of the APCC.
