State Govt abolishes some checkgates

GUWAHATI, May 27 - The State Government today abolished some of the checkgates under the Department of Environment and Forests.

This follows a review of the position of the checkgates under the department which was done with a view to preparing a roadmap to abolish all checkgates and suggesting an alternative system for enforcing revenue compliance like flying squads, surprise check, self-certification and intelligence-based action.

The Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Environment and Forests Department, issued the notification today informing the development.

The checkgates which have been abolished with immediate effect are Batiapara Checkgate, Khanapara Checkgate and Khanamukh Checkgate under Kamrup East Division; Dumunichowki Checkgate, Tulsibari Checkgate and Ganeshmandir Checkgate under North Kamrup Division; and Uporhali Checkgate under Kamrup West Division, which are under Central Assam Circle.

Similarly, the checkgates under Aie-Valley Division of the Social Forestry Circle, Bongaigaon, North Salmara Beat & Checkgate and Rakhaldubi Beat-cum-Checkgate have been abolished.

Dargakona Checkgate in Cachar Division under Southern Assam Circle has also been abolished.
