State engineer honoured

GUWAHATI, Jan 24 � Abhijit Sarma Baruah has been honoured by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication � an apex body of the Government of India under the Department of Science & Technology � with the National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science and Technology

The award is presented to an individual or an institution for outstanding work in popularisation of science and technology and/or promotion of scientific temper among children which has had the widest impact in the country during the past five years.

An engineer by profession, Sarma Baruah has consistently been writing on science, including science and science fiction for children, for about three decades. He has been a regular contributor to different newspapers and journals besides science magazines.

Currently the editor of Bijnan Jeiti, the science journal published by the Asam Bijnan Samiti, Sarma Baruah has also authored science plays for radio and science serials for television. He has delivered a number of lectures on science at various forum, including those organized by the Sahitya Akademi. Also an established short-story writer and novelist, Sarma Baruah has penned some 80 books, 22 of those on science and scientific subjects. The award consists of Rs 1 lakh, a memento and a citation.
