GUWHATI, May 16 - At a time when crime against women has become a major issue in Assam, a mobile app conceived by an Assamese engineer and developed by a software firm in Bengaluru can be of great help to the law enforcing agencies to deal with the problem. The app has already been launched in the Electronic City, Bengaluru and Bengaluru police has already accepted it.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, the Director of the Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Bengaluru, Prabir Kumar Das, who conceived the app, which was developed by Afini Technology Private Limited, said that the app named Track Me Mobi can be of great help to the women who have to move alone and the law enforcing agencies can also help with the use of the app.
Giving details of the functioning of the app, Das said that though a number of such mobile apps have been developed in the past, in most such cases, the woman in distress have to press the panic button, which might not be possible in all the cases. There is also a possibility that the miscreants may snatch away the mobile phone and in such a case, the woman in distress cannot use the phones to send the distress signals.
However, the new app is totally different from the old ones and as special codes would be given to the users, no one else would be able to send signals from it. As soon as a woman starts her journey, she can switch on the app and the movement is tracked till she reaches the destination. The person using the app can put in numbers of family members and friends and the app sends periodical signals to the mobile phone of the person using it and if she does not respond to it, distress signals would be sent out immediately. The miscreants would not be able to use the phone to respond as the code would not be known to them.
Das pointed out that normally the criminals have a tendency to indulge in crimes if they are confident of not getting caught. If the police and other Government agencies get involved and start using the app, all the commercial vehicles can be registered with the registration numbers and photos and names of the drivers. In such cases, the persons using such commercial vehicles can register the numbers of the vehicles before boarding it and that would be tracked all throughout the journey.
Das revealed that the app is now being used in the electronic city, Bengaluru and Bengaluru police has accepted it. However, registration of all the commercial vehicles would take some time.
The app can be used even in the places where the internet connectivity is not up to the mark. The app would generate text messages from time to time and if the person using it does not respond, distress signals would be sent immediately.
For the time being, the app is given for free and Das said that they are trying to get it funded by some corporate houses under their CSR projects or to get sponsors for the same.
