State DGP welcomes NCTC

By Correspondent

DIPHU, March 9 State police chief Jayanta Narayan Choudhury has admitted that policing in the Hamren subdivision of the strife-torn Karbi Anglong district has remained far from expectation, although a separate police district was created comprising that hilly zone bordering Meghalaya.

Addressing a press conference at Diphu recently, the DGP said that poor infrastructure and lack of logistics have made policing ineffective and therefore we are revamping the whole system soon. About the chronic border dispute with Meghalaya in bordering areas of Hamren, Choudhury said that it is out of his periphery.

Commenting on the Centres plan to create a National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), in Assam and whether it would violate the federal structure of the Constitution, Choudhury said it is good to have a striking force close at hand, it will not hamper normal police function. As a number of other Central organisations are also functioning now, from an administrative point of view we do not have any problem. We welcome the NCTC , but I cannot comment on political point of view. About the recent Ganeshguri grenade explosion, the DGP said we had intelligence input on that but in this case the ULFA outsourced the attack.

The DGP concede that overground Kuki militants are still moving freely instead of rremaining inside the designated camp which has raised hostility and factional clash. He informed that the Government will soon set up a designated camp near Saijan village for the Kuki outfit at the foothills of Singhasan hill track.

The DGP during his interaction on assorted matters admitted that tremendous increase in forged currency needs to be tackled by a specialised agency like the Bureau of Revenue Intelligence. He said that forgery of currency is done so accurately it is becoming trickier to know the difference.

Speaking on talks with the ULFA, Choudhury said that probability of success in talks is higher if Paresh Barua comes overground.
