State DGP pitches for free, fair polls

GUWAHATI, Feb 26 - Director General of Assam Police Mukesh Sahay today issued a strong warning to the perpetrators of crime ahead of the ensuing Assembly polls asserting that �those hobnobbing with extremist outfits or resort to use of illegal weapons would be dealt firmly�.

He said that any activity, which might act as a deterrent to a free-and-fair poll, besides any kind of terror financing, will not be tolerated.

�Although the number of polling booths marked as safe is expected to be higher this time, law-enforcing agencies would be on their toes all the time. The homework is being done,� he said adding that around 1,000 polling booths is expected to be marked as critical and 3,000 as hyper sensitive ones.

He mentioned that although there is no threat percept in view of the ensuing polls, security forces would not take any chances and the security cover of candidates would be assessed and the needful would be done.

The top Assam cop informed that around 4,000 non-bailable warrants have been executed in the view of the polls and another 6,000 are still pending.

He also informed that the security agencies has managed to recover a record number of arms and ammunition in the last couple of years.

�Our primary concern is controlling the illegal use of weapons. As far as licensed arms are concerned, we would initiate move in a phased manner,� the DGP said.
