State developed under Gogoi, claims Sonia

By Correspondent

BISWANATH CHARIALI, March 30 - Assam had a bitter past and the situation was so bad that even some banks had stopped operations in the State. But the State has developed in all fronts during the 15-year tenure of the Tarun Gogoi-led government in the State, said Congress president Sonia Gandhi at a massive election rally held at Kamalakanta Kshetra here today in support of Congress candidate Noorjamal Sarkar.

Saluting the people of the land of Lachit Borphukan, Chilarai, Kanaklata Baruah, Maniram Dewan, etc., the Congress president said that she is proud to start her election campaign at the historical Biswanath Chariali.

Criticising the BJP alliance in the State, she said that the alliance is not for the good cause of the people, because the price of the essential commodities, like food, medicine, etc., consumed by common men have reached sky high during the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Criticising sharply the Modi government, Gandhi said that they always go against the Constitution, democracy and the common men. The Modi government failed to bring the black money back to the country though it had promised to do so before the last election.

She claimed that the Modi government had put the State in a precarious condition by snatching away the Special Category State Status from it. It did nothing for the flood-affected people of the State. That is why the BJP alliance must be stopped from coming to power in the State, she said and called upon the party worker to strengthen the hand of the Congress.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the BJP is spreading rumours against his government. He also dwelt at length on the various developmental schemes, like women empowerment, health, education, etc., initiated by his government for the benefit of the common men.

The rally was also addressed by State Congress chief Anjan Dutta, Congress candidate Noorjamal Sarkar and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Borah, while All India Congress general secretary CP Joshi, former State Congress chief Bhubaneswar Kalita, etc., were also present on the occasion.
