State BJP hails Article 370 repeal

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 5 - The State BJP today hailed the Central governments decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution, which grants special status to Jammu & Kashmir, and to reorganise and bifurcate the State into two separate Union Territories.

State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said that the decision had been taken on the principle of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat and will ensure equal rights for all citizens of the country.

Henceforth, there will be no dual citizenship, separate Constitution or separate flag in Jammu & Kashmir. Instead, as a Union Territory, it will have equal rights on par with other regions of the country, said Dass.

He congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for taking the lead in abrogating Article 370.

Meanwhile, the ruling party criticized the Opposition Congress for opposing the repeal of Article 370.

It is due to the wrong policies of successive Congress regimes that the situation in Jammu & Kashmir deteriorated. Congress has a history of acting soft on the issue of national security and unity. At a time when the entire country has supported the governments stand, the Congress has opposed it, said State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami.

He, however, complimented senior Congress leader Bhubaneswar Kalita for his stand on the issue. Kalita today resigned from the Rajya Sabha in protest against the partys stand on Article 370.

Asked if the BJP would be willing to induct Kalita into the party, Goswami said, Our doors are open for all those who believe in the ideology of nationalism and on the development agenda of Prime Minister Modi.
