State artistes present prog at Chaupal

GUWAHATI, March 8 � Artistes from Assam presented a beautiful cultural evening entitled � Get closer to the North East� at Chaupal in Andheri recently. Noted TV and film personality Rajendra Gupta along with a group of likeminded artistes and friends had started Chaupal 14 years back in order to bring the people of our country closer to each other by the medium of art and culture. Chaupal is a meeting place for the villagers to discuss various issues and to bring about cultural development of the society.

Noted Hindi author Sawarmal Sanganeria who is a Chaupali himself took the initiative to dedicate the evening in the name of the North eastern States. He gave a brief introduction about North East and dwelt at length about the contribution of Mahapurush Shrimanta Sankardev. Speaking on the occasion filmmaker Jahnu Baruah pressed upon the need for the people of our country to appreciate and identify oneself with the art and culture of every nook and corner of the country, as it is only through this cultural assimilation that we will be able to identify ourselves as one India.

Devashish Sharma, Deputy Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, Mumbai who took an active part in organizing the event spoke on the issues related to the alienation of the North East and with the rest of India, and the need for economic development of the North Eastern States coupled with psychological initiatives to bind the people of our country to art and culture. He lauded the active part taken by the institutions like the Chaupal to bring people together and promote understanding.

Noted Satriya exponent Prateesha Suresh enthralled the audience by her performance. Bihu and Rabha Nritya was presented by the Shreemoyee Asamiya Mahila Samity. This was stated in a press release.
