Stage set for sub-jr tennis in city

GUWAHATI, Oct 29 - The newly formed Guwahati Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) will organise the Guwahati Open Sub-Junior Tennis Championship from November 2 to 6 at the Nurul Amin Tennis Complex in Nehru Stadium here.

�Our theme is tennis for all and our main aim is to provide everyone with an opportunity to play the sport irrespective of his and her background. The championship carries a total of Rs 1 lakh as prize money,� said Kalyan Das, advisor, GLTA in a press conference here today.

The championship will be played in two categories � U-12 and U-14 for boys and girls. The winners in each category will walk away with a cash reward of Rs 5,000 while the runners up will have to be content with Rs 4,000. Semifinalists will be awarded with Rs 3,000 while quarterfinalists will receive Rs 2,000 each. Sports goods manufacturer HEAD is the main sponsor for the upcoming event which will feature participants from the Northeastern States including Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh along with host State Assam.

�More than 200 players from across the region are expected to participate in the championship. The main aim behind organising this event is to encourage and nurture the upcoming talents in lawn tennis. We are also planning to organise a coaching camp for the budding talents. It will basically be for players aged 10, 12 and 14 years. We are in talks with some of the leading coaches,� Das added.

The event will be inaugurated by Minister of Health and Education, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Among those present during the occasion were Anirban Das, president, GLTA; Hasibuddin Ahmed, vice president, GLTA and Nabajyoti Kalita, secretary, GLTA.
