Stage set for Brajanath Sharma Drama Festival

GUWAHATI, Sept 8 - As in previous years, this year too the annual Brajanath Sharma Memorial Drama Festival will be held from September 11 to 15 at Rabindra Bhawan here under the aegis of Samahar Natya Gosthee, an amateur theatre group.

Informing this, Drama Festival Committee president Lalit Sarma said in a press release, �We are very happy to formally announce the programme of the festival. During the last nine years, this festival has become a very important and landmark cultural event of the State. Now, it is a big responsibility on our shoulders to make it a grand success every year.�

Since 2007, Samahar has been organising this annual theatre extravaganza in the memory of Brajanath Sharma, the torchbearer of Assamese mobile theatre industry. He was the pioneer of modern Assamese theatre and had first brought women on the stage to introduce co-acting in the State, in 1933.

The programme for the 9th edition of the festival has been finalised and the inaugural ceremony will be held on September 11 from 5.45 pm.

The ceremonial lamp will be lit by Brajanath Sharma�s daughter Nirmala Mishra and granddaughter Neelakshi Mishra Sharma. The festival will be inaugurated by scholar and social scientist Dr Hiren Gohain.

Natyam from Puranigudam, Nagaon, will present Kanchan Ranga, written by Shambhu Mitra. The satirical drama is directed by Anjan Bhuyan. �The play talks about deteriorating human values in the face of money power. It is about people�s greed for materialistic goods by sacrificing basic human emotions,� the release said.

A host of plays by a number of popular groups have been lined up for the festival.
