By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 2 - A campaign by Srijan Foundation to highlight its Charter of Hindu Demands which was launched on September 22 this year has received support of over 55,000 signatories online along with another 7,000 signatories offline from 14 different organisations across the State.

The charter will soon be submitted to the Prime Minister through the Governor so that it may be placed for discussion and approval in the ensuing winter session of Parliament. One of the important demands of this charter is to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment Bill), 2016 in its present form. Further, we also demand that Assam be excluded from the purview of the Bill in the future, as the State is already overburdened due to a higher population density than the all-India average, Prof Sukumar Nandi, former Deputy Director, IIT Guwahati, Prof SV Rao, Head, Department of Computer Science, IIT Guwahati, and Dr Eeshankur Saikia, Associate Professor, Gauhati University, said in a statement on behalf of all the members and signatories.

The charter also demanded the end of legal and institutionalised discrimination against the Hindus by the Indian state, which it said was against the spirit of the equality of citizens irrespective of religious identity.

To this effect, the group demands that Dr Satyapal Singhs Private Members Bill No. 226 of 2016, pending in Lok Sabha for amending Articles 26 to 30 of the Constitution be passed forthwith in the forthcoming Parliament session, to ensure equal rights to Hindus at par with others in the matters of running educational institutions without undue interference of State, it said.

In order to protect and preserve the Hindu native cultural and religious traditions, practices and symbols from unwarranted interference not only by the State and its agencies but also from others, the group urges enactment of Freedom of Religion Act by the Central government immediately, in conformity with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Indigenous People, 2007, it said.

In order to prevent repeat of religious persecution including genocide as suffered by the Kashmiri Hindus, the charter demanded tripartite division of J&K into three States of Kashmir, Ladakh and Jammu, and abrogation of the Article 370.

In an another demand, it demanded an immediate and complete ban on export of all types of meat/beef to lower its prices by increasing its availability in the domestic market while reducing the adverse impact on the soil and environment, besides eliminating social friction and law and order issues.
