By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, May 27 - An Enfield Bullet motorcycle bearing registration No. AS 03-W 2300 owned by businessmen Hari Baheti was stolen from his residence at Madhab Deb Path of Dahabora Chowk here on Saturday night.

Baheti lodged an FIR in this regard at the Jorhat Police Station. Investigation into the case is on.

It may be mentioned here that during the past four months there have been a spurt in incidents of theft in shops, vehicle lifting and also incidents of snatchings bags containing cash and also mobile handsets from pedestrians and pillion-riders by motorbike-borne anti-social elements.

Last month, the Jorhat-based Upper Assam Chamber of Commerce (UACC), one of the oldest and largest traders body in Upper Assam expressed deep resentment over sharp rise in incidents of forceful donation by various organisations from businessmen and also about the increasing number of cases of thefts in recent times in this Upper Assam city.

Mentioning that sharp increase in incidents of theft in shops in recent times has led to a sense of insecurity among the traders here, the UACC submitted a complaint to the local police authorities with copies to the State DGP in Guwahati, DIG (Eastern Range) based in Jorhat, besides Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police respectively.

The traders body blamed the local police for not taking timely action against the culprits.

It may be mentioned here that on January 29 this year, Jorhat Police launched a project named Third Eye at the Jorhat Police Station under which 32 CCTVs were installed at different localities for monitoring to assist in tackling crime.

Meanwhile, police during the past one-and-a-half months arrested over 20 persons who were reportedly involved in cases of snatching of cash, mobile phones and two-wheeler lifting, a police source stated.

However, newer cases have been reported almost every other day indicating that more people from different gangs are operating with impunity though efforts to nab the culprits was on, the source said.

The source added that a few armed persons too were arrested recently.
