Sportspersons honoured by State Govt

GUWAHATI, July 30 � Altogether 26 sportspersons, who won medals or represented the country in international events, were honoured with cash awards in a function held here today.

The function was organised by the State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare (SLAC) and Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare where Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was present as the chief guest. Sports Minister Ajit Singh, MLAs Capt Robin Bordoloi, Anjan Dutta, Joint Director Sports and Youth Welfare Anjan Sarma, journalist Premadhar Sharma, advocate Satyen Sarma were also present on the occasion. A website of SLAC was also launched in the function.

Member Secretary of SLAC and MLA Debabrata Saikia welcomed the gathering. Financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each were also distributed to the State level sports organisations which are affiliated to the Assam Olympic Association.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister urged the sportspersons to work hard so that they can earn laurels for the country and the State. He also promised to provide all possible help for the development of sports in Assam.

The benefited sportspersons are: (International medal winners) Jayanta Talukdar (archery, Rs 1.25 lakh), Bipul Boro (archery, Rs 1.25 lakh), Tunlai Narzary (athletics, Rs 75,000), Shiva Thapa (boxing, Rs 1.25 lakh), Nafisa Sadiq (rowing, Rs 1 lakh), Swapnapriya Baruah, Rs 1 lakh), Mohammad Jamir Hussain (Rs 1 lakh), Apurba Chetia (Rs 1 lakh), Papul Changmai (Rs 1.25 lakh), Monalisha Sonowal (Rs 1 lakh, all weightlifting), Kwilani Brahma (Rs 75,000), Rajani Deori (Rs 1 lakh, both Wushu). (Participants in international events, all Rs 50,000 each) Swmla Boro, Dipali Boro, Sanjay Boro, Rajib Basumatary, Laishangbam Haridas Singh, Himani Boro (all archery), Nibedita Barman (athletics), Rekha Ranee Gogoi, Tasin Begum, Surya Kr Nath, Neelam J Kalita, Nirman R Kashyap (all taekwondo), Pompi Saikia (weightlifting), Sonu Choudhury (carrom).
