By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 29 - The inaugural ceremony of the Special Immunisation Drive for Kamrup Metro district was organised by the health department and National Health Mission today in the New Guwahati Rongali Bihu Field, Bamunimaidam.

Lok Sabha MP Bijoya Chakravarty was the chief guest of the event. The meeting was also attended by Barnali Sharma, Additional DC (Health) of Kamrup Metro; Dr R Nunisa, Joint Director (Universal Immunisation Programme); Dr G Saikia, Joint Director of Health Services of Kamrup Metro and Dr U Phukan Barua, District Immunisation Officer of Kamrup Metro.

Speaking at the event, Chakravarty underlined the importance of preventing various diseases through immunisation and expressed concern that even today many parents do not bring their children for immunisation due to various reasons like lack of knowledge and fear.

She said that the State government has initiated a slew of measures for improving the health sector in Assam.

Sharma, in her address, said that the Assam government has initiated the special drive to vaccinate all unvaccinated and partially vaccinated children under the Universal Immunisation Programme. This initiative will eventually close immunity gaps and strengthen immunisation coverage, she added.

Dr Nunisa said that drives will be conducted from today to October 4 (1st round), November 7-12 (2nd round) and December 12-17 (3rd round).

In his speech, Dr Saikia said that the full immunisation percentage of the State is not satisfactory at present and hence the government has initiated the special immunisation drive. He requested all the staff concerned to work dedicatedly for providing necessary service to the people.
