Spike in COVID-19 cases in Cachar; Jorhat lockdown to be lifted today

SILCHAR, July 22 - In yet another major spike, 159 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected in Cachar district on Tuesday. Minister of Health Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma informed in his tweet that out of 1680 new COVID-19 patients, 159 cases are from Cachar district.

On the other hand, District Media Expert NHM Suman Choudhury informed that a seven-year-old minor from Hailakandi and a 46-year-old person from Baghabazar in Cachar, both detected to be COVID-19 positive have died.

The Cachar district administration making arrangements for treatment of COVID-19 patients as the Borkhola Model Degree College has been transformed into a makeshift COVID hospital.

Meanwhile, in keeping with the growing number of cases, the district administration has opened eight COVID screening centres at the block level. The centres have come up at Harina MPHC, Digorkhal MPHC, Thaligram MPHC, Diger Fulertal SHC, Darmikhal MPHC, Ram Chandra Barman Public HS School, Joypur, Shibtilla MPHC and Rajnagar MPHC.

817 positive cases in Kamrup district: With COVID-19 cases rising all over the State, at least 817 positive cases have been detected in Kamrup district till July 21, who are either under treatment or have been released after recovery, ANN Service reports from Mirza.

Talking to this scribe over telephone, a senior official of the Kamrup district administration said that altogether 24850 samples have been collected from various quarantine centres in Kamrup district out of which 21450 samples have tested negative, 817 tested positive while the results of 1956 cases are still pending as Tuesday.

A total of 140 active containment zones have been identified in Kamrup district and 79 positive cases have been detected from them. The district administration has set up several quarantine facilities with 1003 beds, out of which 87 beds are in government hospitals and 916 in private institutions. Altogether 2050 isolation beds have been set up at different COVID hospitals in Kamrup district.

Online grievance redressal system launched: The Lakhimpur district administration has launched Whatsapp service on its landline number and activated its online presence on Twitter and Facebook. This was stated in a press release by DIPRO, Lakhimpur on Tuesday evening, our North Lakhimpur Correspondent reports. Meanwhile, the total number of patients tested positive for COVID-19 in Lakhimpur district has risen to 385 following the detection of the disease in seven more persons in the last 24 hours.

Jorhat lockdown to be lifted: The Jorhat district administration has announced that the total lockdown in force in Jorhat Municipal Board and in 11 suburban areas since 7 pm of July 9 will be lifted from 7 am of July 23 (Thursday). However, several restrictions have been imposed by the administration in this regard.

An order passed by the Jorhat District Magistrate who is also the Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority today, stated that the restrictions imposed from July 23 will remain in force till August 7. The order mentioned that the lockdown on Saturday and Sundays for JMB and the suburban areas will continue as per earlier order in this regard.

Case against Biswanath doctor and laboratory: A suo motu case was registered by Biswanath police on Tuesday against Dr Gunjan Pathak, owner of �Pinnacle Diagnostics�, a private laboratory, here, who is also a government physician and against the employees of the laboratory. It is worth mentioning that the RP Plaza complex where the laboratory is located was declared a Covid-19 containment zone, but the laboratory was allegedly being run in violation of the law, Our Biswanath Chariali Correspondent adds.

MLA�s sit-in: While Minister of State for Health, Pijush Hazarika was on a visit to Karimganj on Tuesday, MLA Kamalaksh Dey Purkayastha sat on the stairs in front of the DC office demanding improvement of health services in the district, ANN Service reports from Nilambazar. The MLA demanded that the ventilators and ICU be installed at the Karimganj Covid Hospital soon.

JE dies at Kokrajhar: A 55-year-old junior engineer of the Irrigation Department of Kokrajhar who died at Kokrajhar�s RNB Civil Hospital on Tuesday tested positive for Covid-19, making it the first death in Kokrajhar, our Kokrajhar Correspondent adds. It may be mentioned here that 22 persons have tested positive in Kokrajhar in the last 24 hours, taking the case count to 254.

Two more doctors test COVID-19 positive: Two more doctors of Nalbari Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital on Tuesday tested COVID-19 positive. They are Dr Bhumidhar Barman and Dr Jayanta Sarma. Three more staff members of the hospital and eight persons of the canteen also tested COVID 19 positive. According to official sources, 17 more persons today tested positive taking the total positive cases in the district to 329 so far.

48 inmates of Nagaon jail positive: As many as 76 people including 48 inmates of Nagaon central jail, one senior private physician and a employee of the office of Joint Director, District Health Services, tested positive for COVID 19 on Tuesday, taking the total number of positive cases in the district to 1201, a correspondent adds from Nagaon.

15 positive at Sualkuchi: Following detection of 15 new positive cases in greater Sualkuchi including Hajo, Singimari areas, the total number has shot up to 98 till the filing of this report on Tuesday, ANN Service adds from Sualkuchi.

Barpeta total 667: Five persons tested COVID-19 positive in Barpeta district on Tuesday taking the tally of the virus infection to 667. Till now 20965 tests have been conducted, our Barpeta Correspondent reports.

More COVID-19 beds at Hailakandi: In view of rising number of COVID-19 positive cases in Hailakandi district, the administration will make provisions of another 1,500 beds in COVID care centre. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Pijush Hazarika instructed the district administration during his visit to Hailakandi on Tuesday, our Hailakandi correspondent reports.

Reviewing the COVID-19 situation at DC�s conference hall with MP, MLAs, DC, senior officials of the administration and health department here, Hazarika asked the administration to convert three-four facility quarantine centres with best of facilities into COVID Care Centres with provisions for another 1,500 beds for rendering best of medical care and treatment to the affected persons.

Later, Hazarika visited the SK Roy designated COVID-19 Civil Hospital and took stock of the situation there.

656 positive cases in Dhubri dist: After finding 22 new cases in the district the total number of COVID-19 infected persons in the Dhubri district till the filing of this report on Tuesday was 656, our Dhubri Correspondent reports.
