Special session of Sahitya Sabha at Ledo

DIGBOI, Jan 28 � Preparations are on at the Ledo valley in the Tirap tribal belt in the easternmost tip of the State for the seventh special annual session of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, slated from January 31 to February 4. The event will be held at the Ningrula Harmony Ground adjacent to the now abandoned Ledo Airfield of World War II fame.

A reception committee headed by Pradyut Bordoloi, local MLA and Minister of Power, Industries and Commerce, as president is making arrangements to make the session a success. The session will begin with the last executive body meeting of the Sabha for the year on January 31. The programmes on February 1 include the inauguration of the book fair in memory of Jnanpith awardee late Mamoni Raisom Goswami, opening of the exhibition, book release, interaction of children with litterateur Kengsang Kenlang and opening of the delegates� camp followed by the folk cultural evening in memory of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

The third day�s events on February 2 will include a series of competitions on poetry recitation, Bhupendra Sangeet and oration, an intimate session of new writers and artists, discussion between new writers and Yesse Dorje Thongse and Anuradha Sarma Pujari, delegates� session and cultural evening in memory of Dr MC Bhattacharya.

The programme on February 3 will start with a literary seminar followed by a cultural procession, first open session, an intimate discussion of new writers with Dr Rita Chowdhury and Moni Kuntala Bhattacharya and a poets� meet. The day�s events on February 4 will comprise a literary seminar, the second open session, an intimate session with eminent litterateur Homen Borgohain and Dehing Patkai Cultural M�lange. On February 5, there will be an intimate conversation of Rong Bong Terang, president of Asam Sahiya Sabha and Phanindra Kumar Deva Chowdhury, noted fiction writer with artists and writers.

The open sessions on February 3 and 4 will be chaired by Rong Bong Terang, the Sabha president. While on February 3, the open session will be inaugurated by Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik, on February 4, the open session will be inaugurated by Dr Mukundakam Sarma, writer and former judge of the Supreme Court of India. In the fist open session, noted litterateur and Nagaland minister Swurhozeli will be the chief guest and in the secind open session Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will be the chief guest. A galaxy of former presidents of Asam Sahitya Sabha, eminent writers from across the country, distinguished personalities including Paban Singh Ghatowar, DoNER Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister, Dr Om Prakash Bharati, Deputy Secretary of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Dr Kameswar Brahma, president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha and many others will attand the various agenda of the literary event.

When contacted, Bikul Borthakur, president of the main pandal construction committee said that the main pandal with a seating capacity for 4,000 persons and the stage would be ready by January 31.
