GUWAHATI, Jan 5 - Issuing a stringent direction to officials to prepare an error-free National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the interest of the indigenous people of the State, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today called for correct verification of the 6.5 crore documents submitted for NRC update by the people.
Chairing a review meeting of the NRC update process today at the conference room of the Secretariat, Sonowal asked the top officials to visit the districts so that the final NRC remains error-free.
He directed the Deputy Commissioners to carry out weekly review of the NRC updating work in their districts so that the process can be completed within the stipulated time.
Sonowal also informed that the Central Government would be requested to set up a branch office of the Register General of India in the State, where an officer in the rank of Deputy Register would be employed to expedite the whole process of NRC update. He directed the State Chief Secretary to take necessary steps in this regard.
Stating that there would not be any paucity of fund in carrying out NRC update activities, the Chief Minister said the government has accorded the highest priority to preparing an error-free NRC so that the interests of the indigenous populace are safeguarded. He directed all officials involved in the process, especially the DCs and SPs of all districts, to work dedicatedly to complete it within the stipulated time.
Press Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela and other top officials were present in the meeting, said an official release.
