By Correspondent

JORHAT, March 16 - Accompanied by thousands of party-members and supporters, State BJP president and candidate for Majuli Assembly constituency Sarbananda Sonowal today filed his nomination papers at the office of the SDO(C) for the State Assembly polls scheduled for April 4.

Besides Sonowal, SUCI(M) candidate for Majuli constituency Hemanta Pegu, CPI(M) candidate for Jorhat Assembly constituency Nirmal Chandra Gogoi and AGPs Bhabendra Nath Bharali also filed their nomination papers.

After filing his papers, Sonowal addressed a mammoth gathering at Garmur Mini Stadium, where he promised his best efforts to preserve the heritage of Majuli, the Vaishnavite pilgrim centre, and to solve the decades-long problems of flood and erosion, unemployment and poor infrastructure of the river island if he is sent to the State Assembly.

I desire to live in your minds with dignity. I will open three offices at different locations of Majuli to receive applications and complaints of you. I am deeply committed to serve the people across the length and breadth of this river island as your representative in the State Assembly, said Sonowal.

Blaming the Congress government of the State for lack of development in the island, he said that BJP has already projected Majuli to be the finest tourists destination with modern-day infrastructure. The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre has already allotted fund to construct roads and bridges to connect it with Jorhat, Sivasagar and Lakhimpur districts.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Jairam Gadkari has recently laid the foundation stone of a roads and bridges project in Majuli, Sonowal said, and added that BJPs efforts will definitely lead to a better surface communication in Majuli within a few years.

Apart from central BJP leader Dr Mahendra Singh, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, AGP president Atul Bora, AGP MLA Keshav Mahanta were also participated in the rally for Sonowal in Majuli today.
