Sonowal concerned over jehadi activities

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 Expressing concern at the proliferation of jehadi elements in Assam, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that the ruling Congress in the State must rise above narrow party politics and initiate stringent action to check the jehadi activities.

Addressing media persons at the State BJP office here, Sonowal, who is in charge of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent), said that the recent developments in connection to the jehadi elements has proved the BJPs claim that fundamentalist outfits were setting up base in Assam.

The jehadi elements are becoming active in the State and it is the duty of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to assure the people that strong measures are being taken to weed out the fundamentalist outfits, said Sonowal, regretting that Tarun Gogoi has not shown any interest at resolving the burning issues of Assam.

Sonowal further said that although the Central government was ready to extend all help to the State government to solve the crucial problems, Tarun Gogoi has so far not evinced interest to cooperate with the Centre.

Tarun Gogoi has failed in every front and not a single promise made to the citizens has been fulfilled. Instead of cooperating with the Centre, he resorts to cheap politics to contradict the Centre. This attitude of the Chief Minister will harm the citizens of Assam as they would be deprived of the benefits of the welfare schemes, pointed out Sonowal stressing that for development of Assam, the State government and the Central government has to work together.

On the other hand, Sonowal observed that only the saffron party will be able to realise the aspirations of the electorates in Assam.

There will be no change in Assam under the Congress. The State now needs a BJP government, said Sonowal.

The press conference was also addressed by State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharya who said that the party was focusing on strengthening its organisational base and that its membership drive would be given an added impetus.
