Sonia to chair party meeting at home

By The Assam Tribune

New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to chair a meeting of party's central election committee this evening, her first major engagement since Aug 4 when she underwent surgery at an undisclosed destination abroad, party sources said.

"She is supposed to attend the meeting to finalise plans and select more candidates for the Uttar Pradesh polls due next May," a senior Congress leader, who preferred not to be identified, told IANS

The meeting, to be attended by senior leaders of the party, is scheduled to be held at Gandhi's 10, Janpath residence at 4 pm.

On Wednesday, Gandhi had visited the residence of her daughter Priyanka Vadra in the city. Though Gandhi returned to Delhi Sep 8, party leaders have been unable to meet her.

Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi had told IANS recently that Gandhi was in good health. Another senior leader had said that even during her hospitaliation, she had kept abreast of political developments.
