Soneswar, Sanjana champs

GUWAHATI, June 9 � Soneswar Deka of Guwahati and Sanjana Sarma of Sivasagar became proud winners of men�s and women�s titles respectively in the SM All Assam Ranking Table Tennis Championship.

On the other hand, Ajupi Phukan of Duliajan and Bastab Bikash Borbaruah of Golaghat bagged double crown in the meet. While Ajupi won the sub-junior girls singles and doubled titles, Bastab got the title in sub-junior boys singles and doubles.

On the final day of the three-day meet, organised by the Don Bosco Alumini at the Don Bosco School, Guwahati today, veteran Soneswar got the better of Kaushik Kumar Phukan of Dibrugarh 13-15, 11-9, 7-11, 11-4, 13-15, 11-7, 11-2. It was a gruelling fight between Soneswar and his young opponent as the seven-set match extended to the last one. The final also witnessed some excellent rallies and cross-court shots which enthralled the crowd. The women final was also a keenly contested one as experienced Sanjana managed to beat Mallika Gogoi of Duliajan 12-14, 11-7, 13-11, 6-11, 15-13, 10-12, 11-8. Mallika, who entered the women�s final for the first time put up a tremendous fight with powerful shots and beautiful returns. But Sanjana utilised her experience and kept her cool in overcoming Mallika challenge in the final set. Earlier, Alleko Sujalo Hazarika won his second consecutive State crown in the cadet boys group defeating Neelam Bharadwaj 11-7, 12-10, 11-8. MLA Capt Robin Bordoloi was the chief guest in the closing function.

Amitabh Sarma Kaushik of Sivasagar received the best player of the tournament award.
