Pradumn Kumar, the youngest among two sons, lives with his landless parents Rajkumar Singh and Ruby Singh in a rented house at Red Cross Road in Khalihamari area. The jubilant family had not expected such a good result, but was confident that their son would clear the exam.
He (Pradumn Kumar) has been very studious and hard working. Therefore, we had made IIT our target since he was in Class VIII. Today he has made us proud parents. We thought his position would be after 5,000, said Pradumn Kumars father.
Pradumn Kumar had undergone coaching for the competitive exams at Gyan Vigyan Coaching of Gyan Vigyan Academy alongside his regular HS classes. He had scored aggregate 90.2% marks in the HS exams held under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). He studied eight hours daily during school days and about 13/14 hours on holidays.
The director of Gyan Vigyan Coaching, Anuj Pratim Borpujari, however, was hopeful of good performance by Pradumn Kumar. Gauging at his dedication and focus we were expecting him to grab top ranks in various competitive exams, he said.
Despite being a passionate chess player as he had played in the State and national level events during his school stint, Pradumn Kumar had never played chess for past two years. He had also stopped playing computer games so as to keep himself focused on preparation for the JEE Advance exam, his father said.
Pradumn Kumar wants to join IIT Bombay and aspires to undertake specialisation in Nanotechnology research.
