GUWAHATI, June 29 � There seemed to be a slight improvement in the overall flood situation of the State with the respite from the downpour for almost two days now. The Brahmaputra and most of its tributaries are generally maintaining a receding trend and most of the major tributaries are flowing below their respective danger marks.
The mighty river is flowing above the danger mark in five of its six gauge stations at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri. The river is maintaining a rising trend only at Goalpara and Dhubri, said the evening flood bulletin of the Central Water Commission (CWC).
Though three of the major tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra, viz, Burhidihing, Dhansiri (South) and, Kopili are flowing above their respective danger marks, except the Kopili at Dharamtul, most of the major tributaries of the mighty river are maintaining a receding trend.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced from his United States of America camp today that the State Government would extend an ex-gratia amount to the next of kin of those killed in floods at the rate of Rs 1 lakh against each of those killed. This amount would be released to the flood victim�s families in addition to the other compensation amounts they are entitled to, said official sources here.
correspondents add: HATSINGIMARI: More than four lakh people of around 200 villages of South Salmara- Mankachar subdivision of Dhubri district have been directly affected by the flood of the rivers Brahmaputra, Droni and Kalo.
Two school children were reported drowned in the floodwater today from two different parts of the subdivision. One of them, Jonita Khatun (13), daughter of Jolbahar Sheikh of Puran Sukchar village died after falling in the floodwater while she was coming from school after appearing in the half-yearly examination at around 1.15 pm. She was a student of class V of Gnyanjyoti Jatiya Bidyalaya.
Nalbari: Flood situation in Nalbari district remained unchanged today. Over 1,35420 flood affected people have been taking shelter at 195 relief camps in the district.The flood death in Nalbari district went upto six following the death a 65 year old man Phulchand Ali at Kaltuli this afternon. Another person was drowned at Karia last evening.
Mangaldai: The flood situation in Darrang remained grim on the third consecutive day today as the river Brahmaputra along with its five other tributories such as Bornadi , Nanoi, Noanadi, Mangldai nadi and Saktola nadi crossing through the district have reportedly been flowing above the danger level. The flowing trend of Brahmaputra and Barnadi as assessed by the Water Resources Department here today is alarmingly stated to be rising while tendency of other four main rivers of the district are reported to be falling.According to the sources in the Relief and Disaster Management branch of the district the flood has already affected about 1.90 lakh population in four different revenue circles of the district where as Mangaldai Revenue Circle has been worst affected with as many as 1.07 lakh population.
BARPETA: The death toll in the flood this year rose to sixteen with six more deaths reported within the last two days. While one child was washed away at Pazarbhanga this morning another five died yesterday in separate incidents.
The entire flood scenario turned grim since yesterday after the collapse of the Brahmaputra dyke at Pazarbhanga. It created panic among the neighbouring villages like Dakreswar, Bhogerpar, Duha, Oumora, Sutiapara, Shila, Pazarbhanga, Palhaji etc . District administration had also sounded a red alert warning to the people to be alert and active in case of any eventuality.
Goalpara: The first spells of flood in the district is taking ominous turns as the river Brahmaputra is now showing a rising trend and is flowing .74 cm above the danger level as reports of fresh inundations of new areas have started to poured in from the district. As per the latest official figures under Lakhipur circle ,flood waters entered 70 villages and affected a total of 15,772 families, 15 shelter camps set up, under Balijana circle, 67 villages and 7438 families affected and 9 relief camps set up, under Ranjuli circle, 29 villages and 5,200 families affected, and under Matia circle 46 villages were fully affected ,40 villages partially and around 75,000 people have been displaced, 36 relief camps and 17 camps for livestocks have been set up.
Biswanath Chariali: The flood scenario remains unchanged at Biswanath and Naduar revenue circles in Sonitpur district in the last 24 hours as new areas have been reeling under the rising water of the river Brahmaputra because a new portion, around 50 metres long, of the Biswanathghat-Panpur dyke breached last night near Sholmari. At least one lakh families under Biswanath, Chatia and Nagshanker moujas have been affected badly by flash flood and new areas like Kumalia centre, Biswanath Dagaon, Chowaguri, Tewaripal, Panpur, Laltapu etc have been submerged. The Kumalia Centre-Panibharal road, Kumalia-Bagha Centre road and Kumalia-Chowaguri road have gone under water resulting in total disruption of traffic along those roads.
On the other hand, the rising water level caused severe erosion to the NH 52 at Nagshanker last evening and washed away a portion of a culvert. Meanwhile, at least 11 persons including Mirajul Haque, Nur Alam, Jamila Khatun (45) and her son Rafikul (15) etc are feared to be missing since yesterday though official sources denied such incident.
