Six Adivasi ultras held in Sonitpur district

TEZPUR, Nov 3 � In a major operation conducted by the Sonitpur Police, six cadres of Adivasi People�s Army of Assam (APAA) were held last night at Voiraguri village in Barchala area under the Dhekiajuli revenue circle and Dhekiajuli PS in Sonitpur district.

The apprehended cadres of the Adivasi group, who were involved in many extortion and kidnapping cases mostly in the Dhekiajuli area unleashing reign of terror among people, were identified as Jiten Baskey (19), Budheswar Baskey (23), Milan Hemrom (20), Som Murmu (20), Bimal Hemrom (21) (all from the Barchola area in Sonitpur district) and Tarjan Mardi (21), who is an area commander of the group in the district hailing from Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district.

Top police officials here said that Tarjan has admitted that the outfit was involved in the recent kidnapping of the assistant manager of Dhekiajuli TE Dhrubajyoti Talukdar and assistant manager of Tinkhoria TE Bangshi Sona, who is the son-in-law of Dhekiajuli MLA, Bhimananda Tanti.

The self-styled area commander Tarjan has confessed that the organisation, since its inception in 2005, has been mobilising the tea community people and carrying out certain unlawful activities like kidnapping and extortion in some districts, including Sonitpur.

�Details are awaited and the interrogation is on. There must be more clues to some other activities carried out by the outfit,� police said.
