Sivasagar DC reviews election process

SIVASAGAR, Nov 21 - Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar district Pallov Gopal Jha reviewed the preparations of Panchayat poll to be held in the district on December 5.

He also expressed his satisfaction over the works done and called upon the officers engaged in work to cooperate for smooth conduct of the elections for 13 zila parishad seats, 62 anchalik parishad seats, 62 goan panchayat seats and 620 ward commissioner seats in the district.

A total of 3,44,079 voters will exercise their franchise.

There are 2025 candidates in the fray now after withdrawal of nominations and cancellations of candidature on the grounds of non-fulfilment of conditions set by the Election Commission. Out of the 38 nominations filed for zila parishad members, AGP has fielded-9, BJP-13, CPI-1, INC-13 and Ind-2. For anchalik parishad members, there are 40 from AGP, 63 from BJP, one from CPI, 60 from INC, 9 from Asom Sangrami Moncha, and one from Gana Shakti. For gaon panchayat presidents, 46 candidates are from AGP, 61 from BJP, one from CPI(M), 61 from INC, 3 from Asom Sangrami Moncha and 7 Independents. Altogether 1,629 candidates will contest for the gaon panchayat member seats, out of which 305 are from AGP, 609 from BJP, 5 from CPI, 618 from INC, 50 from Asom Sangrami Moncha, 13 from Gana Shakti and 29 are independents.
