Sivasagar celebrates Asom Divas

SIVASAGAR, Dec 2 - Along with the rest of the State, Sivasagar today observed Asom Divas commemorating the great Ahom King Chaolung Sukapha�s entry into the Brahmaputra valley in 1228 AD.

At Rangghar bakori (premises), the day was observed jointly by the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Rongpur Prachin Kirtysinha Sangrakhyan Samitee and Rongpur Nagarik Samittee where Jnanendra Phukan,a tai scholar, addressed the meeting as the guest speaker. Phukan said that Chaolung Sukapha did not bring any religious faith with him but an enduring faith of brotherhood and unique culture. Mun Gogoi, ADC, Sivasagar, released the souvenir Bor Asom, edited by Manoj Gogoi while Dr Prasanta Kr Chutiya spoke as an appointed speaker.

The Ahom Royal Society observed the day at Nungkuri Hill site near Dolbagan. Manirul Islam Bora, president, Sivasagar district committee moderated the proceedings while Kamala Rajkonwar, president, Ahom Royal Society, Rajiv Rajkonwar alias Arabinda Rajkhowa, chairman, ULFA and adviser, Royal Society, Himaangshu Neog, Parshajyati Gogoi, Prasanta Das, Kalyan Borgohain, Debajit Gogoi, Tanuj Tanmoy Gogoi and Biswsjit Bora took part in the function. Several Buddhist monks from Thailand also attended the function.

Arabinda Rajkhowa in his speech said that a number of leaders used the name of the great Ahom king for their rise in the political field but did nothing to develop Charaideo and nearby places from where Sukapha ruled an extended Ahom kingdom.
