Siukapha remembered

GUWAHATI, Dec 5 - Siukapha Divas was celebrated by the All Tai Ahom Students� Union (ATASU) Kamrup (M) district committee, Guwahati at the ATASU�s head office situated at Jayanagar here, a press release stated.

Basant Gogoi, president of the district committee hoisted the flag on the occasion and lit an earthen lamp at the maidam. In the evening at around 5 pm Gogoi lit an earthen lamp at Dighalipukhuri to commemorate the day. The ATASU district committee members lit 3,000 earthen lamps at the Dighalipukhuri area. The students leaders said that we should always remember the contributions of Swargdeo Chaolung Siukapha, the architect of modern Assam. He was the first king of the Tai Ahom dynasty whose kingdom ruled Assam for nearly 600 years. �His contributions in making the greater Assamese society cannot be forgotten,� Gogoi said.
