Siu-Ka-Pha Award presented to Dr Padmeswar Gogoi

DERGAON, Dec 6 -�The Siu-Ka-Pha Award, instituted by the central committee of different ethnic groups and organisations of Golaghat district, was presented to noted educationist, Botanist and folklore researcher Dr Padmeswar Gogoi at a programme held at Siu-Ka-Pha Samannay Kshetra in Golaghat on Monday.

The inaugural edition of the award carries a citation, a memento, a cheleng chador and Rs 10,000, which was presented to the awardee by Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Dhiren Hazarika.

Receiving the award, Gogoi said that whatever little he has done was not in anticipation of any award or honour. �So many things in the field of Botany and folklore still remain untouched,� he said.

He donated the cash amount presented to him to the organising committee to spend on activities to promote the ideals of Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha.

The day-long programme began with flag-hoisting by Dr Khogen Phukan followed by�smriti tarpan�by senior journalist Rohit Gogoi.

Floral tributes were paid to the statue of Siu-Ka-Pha by senior journalist Dwipen Dutta.

An open meeting was held with noted educationist and film director Dinesh Gogoi in the chair and it was moderated by Krishna Baruah. Associate professor of DR College Devajit Phukan delivered the welcome address.

Addressing the gathering, associate professor of DR College Dr Tasdduk Amanul Hussain spoke about different aspects of the life and achievements of the architect of greater Assam, Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha.

The meeting was also addressed by educationists Dr Bontirani Gogoi and Dr Khogen Phukan, AASU leader Sayed Monowar Hussain, assistant commissioner and DIPRO in-charge Papu Gogoi, advocate Jayanta Kumar Goswami, vice president of Tai Ahom Students� Union Jyoti Prasad Gogoi, among others.

Several competitions were also held among children.
