Situation in rain-affected Silchar grim

SILCHAR, March 31 - Situation in the rain-affected areas of Silchar and its outskirts continued to be grim on Thursday after overnight heavy showers disrupted civic life.

Almost all areas of the city, including Link Road, Bilpar, Ambikapatty, Shillongpatty and the national highway were inundated.

The communication between Silchar and Karimganj was disrupted after a huge portion of the NH-53 at Banglaghat near Kalyani Hospital was washed away. According to sources, one Arupa Bhattacharjee (32) has been missing from the affected area. Another person, identified as Ranindra Das (50), a resident of Karatigram also remains traceless.

The Cachar district administration ordered closure of all schools in the district on Friday and Saturday due to heavy rains and inclement weather. However, the Higher Secondary examinations have been kept outside the ambit of the order.
