Situation at Gas Cracker still tense

By OUR bureau

DIBRUGARH, March 3 Work came to a total standstill for the second day today at the Assam Gas Cracker Project, a Rs 10,000 crore undertaking of Brahmaputra Cracker & Polymer Limited (BCPL). Yesterday, one worker died after personnel of the CISF opened fire to quell a stone pelting crowd of project labourers, while four others were seriously injured.

Senior police and CISF officials, including DIGs of the two forces today had a series of meetings at the project site at Lepetkata. The meetings were also attended by senior officials of the Dibrugarh district administration. It was decided that a majority of the CISF personnel deputed to the gas cracker project would be transferred, along with the local CISF unit commander.

The BCPL management would meet the workers at a separate meeting on Sunday, to sort out pressing labour issues.

Meanwhile, various local student and youth organisations have demanded that security at the gas cracker project be handed over to the Assam Police.

The district administration here has instituted a magisterial inquiry into yesterday's violence at the gas cracker project. The inquiry will be conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Rajkhowa. He is expected to submit his report by next Saturday.
