Sit-in stir staged

By Correspondent

BOKAKHAT, May 11 - The newly-settled 92 families of Panka, who were evicted from NRL project commissioned site in 1993, staged a sit-in stir in front of the main gate of NRL on Monday demanding fulfillment of the commitments given by the NRL authority.

It needs to be mentioned here that in the greater interest of commissioning of the NRL project and its township as per the Assam Accord, 92 families who had then resided there, were evicted and settled at Panka grant area.

The NRL authority had also assured the evicted families that it would provide jobs to at least one member of the affected families, provide permanent structures to their living cottages, improve road connectivity and provide electricity etc.

But even after 25 years, the NRL authority has not taken any positive step regarding its assurances. In protest against its attitude, the victim families had to resort to the agitational path.

Later, GM Biswajeet Bora and Koustav Sarma of NRL met the protesting families. The agitators have been assured of a tripartite discussion with the Golaghat district administration, after completion of a house-to-house survey of the affected families.
